will receive Family and Friends on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from 6:00 to7:00 p.m. at
Hillside Mortuary Chapel. Hillside Mortuary Directing. She leaves to cherish her memory
seven children, five daughters, Pauline (Bill)Smith, Detroit, MI, Ophelia (Jacob) Odubiyi, St.
Louis, MO, Annie (Fred) Gilbert, Rockford, AL, Mary Frierson, Boston, MA, Georgia Hill,
Montgomery, AL; two sons, Albert(Carolyn) Young and Willie Doss Young, Montgomery,
AL; three brothers, Dilliard (Annie Dell) Watson, Montgomery, AL, Floyd Kelley and
Arthur (Willie) Kelley, Toledo, OH; one sister-in-law, 26grandchildren, and 44 greatgrandchildren;
and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Matilda Wray Gunn
departed this life October 2, 1927, aged about 76 years. She was married to William P. Gunn
on the 16th day of December, 1869. To this union twelve children were born, five having
preceded her, three in infancy, Mrs. Thos. Roberts in 1917 and Miss Ida E. Gunn in 1925.
The deceased is survived by her husband and the following children: Mesdames R. S. Smith,
J. T. Strader and R. Stiers, Charles A., Hardie R., Thos. A. and Bethel C. Gunn. Also
eighteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and a lrage number of relatives and
friends to mourn her loss. Mrs. Gunn was converted quite early in life, uniting with the M.P.
church and later joined the Howard"s Chapel Christian church of which she was a member
at time of her deth. She lived a devoted Christian life. The home has lost a true wife, a loving
mother and the community a good neighbor. The funeral services were conducted the
following day by her pastor, Rev. J. W. Knight, assisted by Revs. H. P. Powell, of Spray, and
Robert Barbour, of Reidsville. The following grandchildren acted as pall bearers: Luther
Barber, William King, Willie Roberts, Nathaniel, Eugene and Willie Gunn. Also the
following grandchildren as flower bearers: Roberts, Maurice and Annie Mae Stiers, Hunter,
Lessie, Ruth, Orene and Irene Gunn. Elwood and Louise Barber and Helen and Gwendolyn
Barnes. The remains were laid to rest in Shady Grove cemetery beneath a beautiful mound
of flowers. May the dear Lord comfort the bereaved and aged companion and children.

Mattie Julia Gunn
of 612 South Lee Street, LaGrange, Georgia, passed away Friday at the West Georgia
Medical Center. Ms. Gunn, a native of Harris County, was born May 19, 1935, and was the
daughter of the late George and Ophelia Ransom Gunn. She attended school in the Harris
County School system and joined the Smith Chapel United Methodist Church at a very early
age. She was a devoted member and served in many capacities; among them, Church choir,
United Methodist Women, and Communion committee. She was employed as a certified
nurses assistant at West Georgia Medical Center and later retired from Florence Hand
Home in 2002. Survivors include her loving sisters, Annie Lee, Marie and Reasie Gunn, all
of LaGrange; her loving brothers, Rev. Bobby C. Gunn (Camilla) and Calvin (Mary) Gunn,
all of LaGrange; sisters-in-law, Arttie Miss Gunn, Pine Mountain, Evelyn Gunn and
daughter Pam, Los Angeles, CA; special god daughter, Diane Gunn (Darryl); special
nephews, Dwayne Gunn and Curtis Gunn Jr.; many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other
