Carolyn Lewis <strong>Gunn</strong> Schmersahl,<br />

88, of Frederick, MD, died on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at College View Nursing Center<br />

of Frederick. She was surrounded by family and friends. She had been a resident of<br />

Sunrise Assisted Living in Frederick from 2007 until April of this year when she moved to<br />

College View Center where she had worked as a nurse for many years. Born July 10, 1923,<br />

in Romney, West Virginia, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Moton Clarence <strong>Gunn</strong> and<br />

Brady Belle Moreland <strong>Gunn</strong> Stone. She was the wife of George W. Schmersahl, who passed<br />

away on November 3, 2010. Mrs. Schmersahl is survived by four children: Barbra A.<br />

Colandreo and her husband Anthony of Old Braddock near Frederick, James A.<br />

Schmersahl and his wife Carmen, of Frederick, Frank E. Schmersahl and wife Carolyn,<br />

and William L. Schmersahl and wife MariBeth of <strong>My</strong>ersville; four grandchildren: Stephen<br />

W. Delaughter and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, Christine Cohen and husband Steve of<br />

Chandler, AZ, Liane Schmersahl and Stephanie Schmersahl of <strong>My</strong>ersville; and seven great<br />

grandchildren: Shelbi, Nicole, Cassandra, and Alexis Delaughter, Kaitlin, Aaron, and<br />

Madeline Cohen. Mrs. Schmersahl grew up in Romney, West Virginia, graduated from<br />

Romney High School, class of 1941, and Potomac State University in Keyser, WV. She<br />

worked as a Laboratory Technician at <strong>New</strong>ton D. Baker Army Medical Facility in<br />

Martinsburg, WV, where she met George Schmersahl. They were married in 1946 in<br />

Martinsburg, WV, and lived in Baltimore, MD, while George completed his Master’s<br />

degree in Microbiology and then moved to Frederick in 1950. In 1975, Carolyn graduated<br />

from the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and cared for others as a nurse<br />

at College View Center in Frederick from 1976 until 2004 when she retired. She was a<br />

member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick for over 60 years where she<br />

taught Sunday School, played in the Bell Choir, sang in the Chancel Choir, and served on<br />

the Altar Guild. She will be fondly remembered by the Friendly Circle Sunday School<br />

Class and Miriam Circle. Carolyn was engaged in the many activities of her children and<br />

grandchildren and will be remembered by many; especially former members of Boy Scout<br />

Troop 799, Frederick and TJ High Schools’ bands and by students and teachers at South<br />

Frederick Elementary where she volunteered. She was loving and giving and will be fondly<br />

remembered by her extended family members, Marjorie Stapf, Sondra Moreland and Jane<br />

Stone and their children and by many old and new friends, especially by her dear friend<br />

Jean Durant, at Sunrise of Frederick. Carolyn's family would also like to acknowledge the<br />

love and kindness of her care givers both at Sunrise and College View. Friends may visit<br />

with the family on Tuesday, May 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home,<br />

106 East Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 2, at<br />

11 am at Calvary United Methodist Church, 131 West Second Street, Frederick. The Rev.<br />

Kenneth R. Dunnington and Rev. Harry C. Cole will officiate. Interment will follow at<br />

Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Carolyn’s name to<br />

The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church St, Fredrick, MD<br />

21701 for the benefit of Lincoln Elementary School (formerly South Frederick<br />

Elementary).<br />

born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on March 23, 1917, daughter of Mary McPhee and
