Janet Ribbeck Gunn
Oct. 18, 1919 - March 14, 2011 - Janet Ribbeck Gunn, 91, of Corvallis went home to the
arms of Jesus and to rest in heaven with her many family members, friends and beloved
dog, Chico, on Monday, March 14, 2011. She was born in 1919 in Oak Park, Ill., to
William A. Ribbeck, M.D., and Florence Heard Ribbeck. Her love of medicine began early
in life, and as a teenager, Janet enjoyed spending time with her father as he made his
medical house calls around Oak Park. She graduated as a registered nurse from St. Luke's
School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill., in 1941. After graduating and immediately after the
attack on Pearl Harbor, she enlisted in the U.S. Army. During this time, she met and
married Raymond D. Gunn, who was a Lieutenant in the Army/Air Corps. Through the
years, she worked as a R.N. while raising four children. Janet enjoyed traveling during the
30 years her husband served in the U.S. Air Force. She lived in such places as Germany
and Hawaii, as well as many locations across the United States. Her interests were many
and varied: medicine, graphoanalysis (she authored "Pathology and Handwriting"),
geography, politics, religions, psychiatry, psychology and general science. She also enjoyed
participating in many sports, including tennis, skiing, swimming and golf. She learned to
speak German fluently, and was a devoted Episcopalian. After retiring from nursing,
Janet embarked upon other challenges. She purchased a dilapidated 100-year-old farm
house and supervised the work of remodeling it into a modern and cozy home. She later
purchased a historic house in Pentwater, Mich., and remodeled it into a five-bedroom bed
and breakfast, the Pentwater Inn. She worked as the greeter, cook, tour guide and
housekeeper for 10 years. Always a big supporter of science and education, her last wish
was to have her body donated to Oregon Health & Science University for research
purposes. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Marguerite and
Cynthia; her husband, Raymond; and her oldest son, Raymond Jr. She is survived by her
daughter, Pamela Gunn; her two sons, Jeff Gunn (Sara) and Steve Gunn; as well as her
grandchildren, Nathan (Mary), Camas (Ryan), Lucas and Christopher; and her two greatgrandchildren,
Josiah and Maggie. Per her wishes, no memorial service is planned.
