Eric J. <strong>Gunn</strong>,<br />

60, of 203 Smithfield St. went home to be with his lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on<br />

Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in Jameson Hospital.Born Oct. 1, 1948, in <strong>New</strong> Castle, NJ, he was a<br />

son of Jesse and Elizabeth Wall <strong>Gunn</strong>. His father preceded him in death. His mother<br />

survives.After graduating from <strong>New</strong> Castle High School in 1966, he attended Westminster<br />

College. There he earned a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1971 and later returned<br />

to earn a master’s degree in education.For 33 1/2 years he taught in the <strong>New</strong> Castle Area<br />

School District. He retired in 2005 as a second-grade teacher at West Side Primary<br />

Center.He married the former Roxann Crunkleton on June 2, 1984. Eric loved the Lord,<br />

which was evident in his commitment to his church, St. Luke A.M.E. Zion. He served as the<br />

musical director, superintendent of the Sunday school, Sunday school teacher, trustee,<br />

steward, preacher’s steward as well as the director of Christian education. He initiated the<br />

Sunday breakfast program at the church, which was instrumental in raising the Sunday<br />

school attendance from less than a dozen to more than 50 members. He shared his love for<br />

the Lord as the Christian education director of the Ohio Annual Conference, and was an<br />

annual conference delegate and music director of the Akron District.Eric spread his love<br />

throughout the community. He served on the advisory council of Big Brothers/Big Sisters<br />

and the board of directors of the Lawrence County United Way. He was a founding<br />

member of the Operation Blueprint/Lazarus Group, where he served as a past president.<br />

He was the first African-American president of the <strong>New</strong> Castle Teachers’ Union. Although<br />

he suffered a stroke in February 2008, which severely limited his speech and mobility, he<br />

would attend his beloved St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church whenever it was possible.Eric loved<br />

the Lord, his church, playing golf, watching football and music.He was preceded in death<br />

by his father.Eric will be sadly missed by his mother; devoted wife of 24 years, Roxann;<br />

daughter, Lauren; son, Joshua; and sister, Stephanie Holness, all of <strong>New</strong> Castle; brother,<br />

Jimmy <strong>Gunn</strong> of West Palm Beach, Fla.; godchildren, Tyler Hudson and Diamond<br />

Richardson; and a host of other relatives and friends.Visitation is 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at St.<br />

Luke A.M.E. Zion Church, 603 Harbor St. The family will greet friends and family from 2<br />

to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Because of Eric’s love for music, the evening visitation will be a<br />

celebration in song. Anyone interested in giving a musical tribute to Eric should contact the<br />

church at (724) 656-0551 by 9 p.m. tomorrow.A homegoing service to celebrate the life of<br />

Eric <strong>Gunn</strong> will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Robert Hickey will<br />

officiate.Eric will be laid to rest in Graceland Cemetery.Arrangements are entrusted to the<br />

Erwin T. <strong>Gunn</strong> - Erwin Troy <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

Erwin was born Sept. 13 1929 to Bruce and Harelene <strong>Gunn</strong> in Tahoka Texas. He passed<br />

away Dec. 7, 2004. In 1949 he joined the Airforce and was married to Conyetta (Connie)<br />

Johnson. A growing brood of sons convinced him a college education was in order, so a<br />

degree in engineering from Texas Technological University followed the Air Force.<br />

Growing up in dry West Texas towns he decided that when he could make a choice he"d
