John William Gunn Jr.,
80, of Salem, Va., passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011. He was retired from the
Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Wisely. He is
survived by his wife, Janet E. Gunn; a daughter, Billie Ann English; two sons and wives,
John W. Gunn IV and Sharon, and Michael L. Gunn and Diana; sisters, Margie Carter
and Norma J. Morgan; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and two nephews. A
Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Lotz Salem
Chapel with Chaplain Charles T. Gwaltney officiating. Visitation will be held one hour
prior to the service. Interment will be private. The family requests no flowers to be sent.

Watervliete, Oct. 2—Dr. John William Gunn, prominent Watervliete physician for
more.than 50 years, died Thursday Oct 1, 1953, night at a Kalamazoo, Michigan hospital at
the age of 83. .Dr. Gunn was born Sept. 5, 1870, on,.a farm near Oshtemo, the son of C. C.
and Helen Gunn. He entered Kalamazoo Baptist college at the age of 16, and began his
study of medicine In 1890, attending the College of physicians and Surgeons at Chicago. He
was graduated from the University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky., in 1894, and started his
practice at Berrlen Center. He then went toColoma for three years and Keeler or two
before settling in Watervliet In 1898, Dr. Gunn had practiced medicine in Watervllet
longer than any other doctor, He served the village as Its president, being elected In 1908,
and ilso served on the village council for a number of years and was a city commissioner
after the city charter was adopted in 1925. He was a life member of Henry Chamberlin
lodge, F & AM No. 08, a 32nd- degree Mason, and a member of the local OES chapter No.
232. Surviving the local doctor are his wife, Susie, one. son. Dr. Harry Gunn, a dentist at St.
Petersburg, Fla., and a grandson, Clarence Gunn of Watervliet. He also leaves two greatgrandchildren,
and two brothers, Dr. Glenn Gunn of Kalamazoo and Irwin Gunn of
Plainwell. The body was brought to the Hutchlns funeral home in Walervliet where it will
remain until noon Sunday. At that time It will be removed to the First Methodist Church
where services will be held at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. Emeron Minor, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the Watervliet cemetery where Masonic rites will be conducted.
Johnaner Gunn, 75,
Services for Johnaner Gunn, 75, will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist
Church. Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery in Jackson. Mrs. Gunn, a former short
order cook, died Friday at Jackson Manor of heart failure. She is survived by her husband,
