Mary Cundiff <strong>Gunn</strong>,<br />

95, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and loyal friend, died January 19, 2013. She<br />

was born in Somerset KY to E.T. and Maude Cundiff. After graduating from Humes High<br />

School, Mary worked for C.F. Work & Sons. On October 27, 1943, she married Andrew<br />

Joseph <strong>Gunn</strong> and together they had three children, Andrew J. <strong>Gunn</strong>, Jr., Michael E. <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

and Patricia G. Whitsitt; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded<br />

in death by her husband, Andrew J. <strong>Gunn</strong>, Sr., her parents and her brother, John<br />

Tomlinson. Since 1957, Mrs. <strong>Gunn</strong> was a faithful communicant at St. Louis Catholic<br />

Church and worked tirelessly for the church as it expanded in the 60's. She was past<br />

president of the Madonna Circle, member of Circle Arts and TGGGG (Tennessee Golden<br />

Girls Golf Group). Throughout her life she enjoyed painting and was very athletic, having<br />

been inducted into the Shelby County Park Commission Softball Hall of Fame. A golf<br />

player, she often reminisced about her many golf buddies. She also volunteered for several<br />

years with Birthright of Memphis. Visitation Wednesday, January 23, 5-7 p.m. at Memphis<br />

Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens Poplar Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held<br />

at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 24 at St. Louis Catholic Church. Burial in Memorial Park.<br />

The family requests memorials be made to Birthright of Memphis or Madonna Learning<br />

Center<br />

Mary Elizabeth <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

widow of the late Richard Clem <strong>Gunn</strong> died yesterday afternoon after an illness of ten<br />

weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. E. Downing, 429 Telfair Street. Mrs. <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

was in her 80 th year, suffered a broken hip ten weeks ago and has been confined to her bed<br />

ever since and gradually sinking for the past week. In spite of her age it had been hoped<br />

that she would recover from the effects of her accident and the news of her death brought<br />

sorrow to countless friends throughout the community. She is survived by one son D. L.<br />

<strong>Gunn</strong> of Augusta, Ga; two daughters, Mrs. F. A. Rheberg of Atlanta and Mrs. G. F.<br />

Downing of Augusta. She leave six grandchildren and three great grand children to<br />

mourn her loss. Funeral services will be ehld this Monday afternoon from the residence,<br />

429 Telfair Street. Reb E. I. Grace officiating and she will be laid to rest in the City<br />

Cemetery. Mrs. <strong>Gunn</strong> was born in Warren County, but made her home with her daughter<br />

in Augusta for the past 36 years, and was loved by a wide circle of frineds here among both<br />

the old and young. Up to the time of her accident she was in good health and very active.<br />

She was a soman who enjoyed life and added to the happiness of all who were thrown with<br />

her and who was so youthful in spirit that it was impossible to connect the thought of age<br />

with her. She was a sincere Christian who proved her faither by her beautiful Christian<br />

life, a faithful member of the First Baptist Church and one who took a prominent part in<br />

the activities of the church. She was a soman of such sweetness of character and warmth of
