Phillip R. <strong>Gunn</strong>, James A. Bumbry II, Harry E. Cunningham, Tony "Tee" Jordan, all of<br />

Roanoke; two sisters, Sonya Y. <strong>Gunn</strong>, Regina R. Cunningham, both of Roanoke; maternal<br />

grandparents, Carlton and Theresa Harden, Danville; godfather, Phillip R. Williams,<br />

Roanoke; five aunts; five uncles; a host of relatives and friends. Funeral service will be<br />

Saturday, May 25, 1996, at 11 a.m. in the Jerusalem Baptist Church with Dr. J. Eugene<br />

Young officiating. Interment will follow at the church Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. Viewing will<br />

begin at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.<br />

Aquinas <strong>Gunn</strong>, Sister<br />

OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, <strong>New</strong> York, died on October 29, 2000 at Dominican<br />

Convent. Born in <strong>New</strong> York City, Helen Catherine (Sister Aquinas) was the daughter of<br />

Patrick and Martha McCallum <strong>Gunn</strong>. Helen Catherine <strong>Gunn</strong> entered the Dominican<br />

Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on June 24, 1923. Sister Aquinas<br />

professed her first vows in 1924 and final vows in 1930. Sister Aquinas <strong>Gunn</strong> earned a BA<br />

from Manhattan College in 1949 and an MA from Fordham University in 1955; both<br />

degrees were for Spanish. Sister Aquinas began her teaching career at St. Paul?s, Norwich,<br />

NY, from 1925-28. From 1928-35, Sister taught at St. Rita?s in the Bronx and St. Rose?s in<br />

Manhattan. Sister taught in the <strong>New</strong> York area from 1937-44 (St. Rita?s, Staten Island and<br />

St. Helena?s Elementary, Parkchester), and from 1947-66 at Holy Rosary High School,<br />

NYC. From 1935-37 she taught at Holy Redeemer School, Webster Groves, MO and later,<br />

from 1944-47, taught in St. Mark?s High School, Missouri. She continued to teach Spanish<br />

at St. Edmund?s High School, Brooklyn until her retirement in 1981. Sr. Aquinas had<br />

completed 55 years as a teacher. After her retirement in 1981, Sr. Aquinas served the<br />

Sisters in Dominican Convent, especially through her loving care in the dining room. She<br />

saw to the details that make everyone feel comfortable and at home. Her warm and loving<br />

smile will be greatly missed. Sr. Aquinas is survived by her nieces, Mary Jane Dykeman<br />

and Margaret Geraghty; her cousin, Maryanne Cavanaugh; and other cousins as well as<br />

grandnieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Dominican<br />

Convent on Thursday, November 2, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation is on Wednesday,<br />

November 1, 2000 from 3:30 to 8:30 at the Convent, 125 Rte. 340, Sparkill, NY. Interment<br />

will be at St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill. Arrangements are by Michael J. Higgins Funeral<br />

Home, <strong>New</strong> City.<br />

Ara <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

WALNUT - Ara Cross <strong>Gunn</strong>, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the North Mississippi<br />

Medical Center. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of the Harmony Baptist<br />

Church in Walnut. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Harmony Baptist Church with Bro.<br />

Tony Morrow and Bro. Brian Tatum officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery.<br />

McBride Funeral Home in Ripley is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include two<br />

sisters, Joan Richerson of Walnut and Florence Cross of Falkner; a brother, John Marlin<br />

Cross Jr. of Collierville, Tenn.; a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by<br />

her husband, James Edward <strong>Gunn</strong>; her parents, John Marlin and Grace Barkley Cross;
