Associations, the Virginia and American Bar Associations, the Virginia and West Virginia
State Bars, and the Maritime Association of the United States. He was on the board of
directors of the Hampton Roads Maritime Association, was a director of the Southeastern
Admiralty Law Institute, and was a former adjunct professor at William & Mary. He was
a speaker at seminars, published law review articles on admiralty matters, was a member
of the Advisory Board of Editors of the Tulane Maritime Law Journal, served as a director
and general counsel for the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation, and was selected as
one of the Virginia Legal Elite lawyers in transportation, admiralty, and intermodal.
Carter Gunn was a good man. He loved his family, his dog, a run through Seashore, an
afternoon on the Bay with a cold beer, and a July morning in the Cowpasture River. He
believed in doing jobs of all sizes the right way (which, thanks to his stubborn streak, was
also his way). He changed his own oil, built his own boatlift, taught his kids how to shake
hands and reminded us that giving your word still means something. He believed simple
things are the most important things, and wore suits well but ripped jeans better. To this
day, he remains unbeaten in family tennis matches and tall-tale telling. He was honest and
humble and trustworthy and spiritual. He was a lawyer, a sailor, a mechanic, a teacher, a
fisherman, a skier, an inventor, and a devoted best friend, brother, son, father, and
husband. Those who knew Carter will remember his humor, vitality, commitment, and
quiet affection. He was the kind of man who makes us all want to be better people, and we
are so proud and blessed to always have him in our hearts. A memorial service will be held
at Eastern Shore Chapel, Thursday March 16, 2006 at two o'clock, officiated by the Rev.
Kathleen Bobbitt. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to
