Joe White <strong>Gunn</strong><br />

Joe White <strong>Gunn</strong>, 84, of Pekin, Ill., formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, Sept. 11,<br />

2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. He was born Aug. 10, 1919, in Little<br />

Rock, Ark., son of James Oliver and Mattie Ophelia White <strong>Gunn</strong>. He and Pauline Gladys<br />

Blank were married Dec. 20, 1944, in Cape Girardeau. She died May 6, 2003. The <strong>Gunn</strong>s<br />

owned and operated Economy Shoes in Pekin 15 years, retiring in 1987. He had also<br />

worked at J.C. Penney stores in Cape Girardeau, and in Galesburg and Danville, Ill. He<br />

worked at Carp"s Department Store in Mount Vernon, Ill., 16 years, and then was a store<br />

manager in California and Sullivan, Mo., Canton, Ill., and Pekin. He was a member of<br />

Olive Branch Masonic Lodge 38 in Danville. He was pianist in several dance bands in<br />

Illinois and Missouri many years. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Harms of Canton; a<br />

son, James <strong>Gunn</strong> of Pekin; and a sister, Annie Parker of Jonesboro, Ark. He was preceded<br />

in death by four brothers and three sisters. The funeral was held Monday at Preston-<br />

Hanley Funeral Home in Pekin. The Rev. Terry Edele officiated. Burial was in Lakeside<br />

Cemetery at Pekin. Joe White <strong>Gunn</strong>, 84, of 212 Cypress Street, Pekin, died at 1:42 p.m.<br />

Thursday, September 11, 2003 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Born<br />

August 10, 1919 in Little Rock, Arkansas to James Oliver and Mattie Ophelia White<br />

<strong>Gunn</strong>,he married Pauline Gladys Blank on December 20, 1944 in Cape Girardeau,<br />

Missouri. She died May 6, 2003 in Pekin. Four brothers and three sisters also preceded him<br />

in death. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy E. (Fred) Harms of Canton; one son, James A.<br />

<strong>Gunn</strong> of Pekin; and one sister, Annie Lee Parker of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Mr. <strong>Gunn</strong> and<br />

his wife owned and operated Economy Shoes in downtown Pekin for 15 years, retiring in<br />

1987. He previously worked at JC Penney"s for 7 years at stores in Cape Girardeau,<br />

Missouri, Galesburg, and Danville. He later worked at Carp"s Department Store for 16<br />

years at Mount Vernon and later as store manager in California, Missouri; Sullivan,<br />

Missouri; Canton, and last in Pekin. He was a former member of Kiwanis and a former<br />

member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He had played the piano for several dance<br />

bands throughout Illinois and Missouri for many years. He was of the Methodist faith.<br />

Masonic services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2003 at Preston-Hanley<br />

Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel with funeral services following. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will<br />

officiate. Visitation will be 30 minutes before the Masonic service. Burial will be in<br />

Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the<br />

January 20, 1970 - A veteran of World War I, Mr. <strong>Gunn</strong> is survived by his wife, Anna, of<br />

Nixa; seven step-daughters, Mrs. Florence Stogner, Nixa, Mrs. Effie Bartz, East Bend,<br />

Wis., Mrs. Dolly Garrison, Carthage, Mrs. Elvena Culey, Kansas City, MRs. Mildred<br />

Owens, Bruner, Mrs. Tina Mae Grueher, Crocker, and Mrs. Dovie Lee Starnes, Sparta.
