initiated both the mantracking and the K9 teams as well as serving in several offices.
During these 39 years, George participated on many dozens of missions for people lost,
stranded or injured in the back-country, getting up at all hours of the night to do
everything from field searching to body recovery to mission coordination. He also became
the person to call with questions of any kind about Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue or
about search and rescue in general. As his cancer advanced, one of our experienced
members wrote last fall, "Your influence, leadership and dedication are present in every
aspect of the Unit." George was born in Pennsylvania and grew up with his parents and
grandparents in the house built by the latter. He graduated from North Allegheny High
School in 1958 and from Muskingum College (Ohio) in 1962. He married Charlotte Pruit a
week after that graduation and they moved to Oberlin, Ohio, where George earned his
M.Th. from the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology in 1966. They remained at Oberlin
until 1969, with George working as an Assistant Dean of Men and a dormitory Head
Resident, counseling a group of at-risk high school students, and spending summers
working at YMCA camps. From 1969 through 1972, George earned a M. Ed. in Student
Personnel Services from Colorado State University while again working as a dormitory
Head Resident. In Fort Collins he joined Club 100 (the forerunner of Larimer County
Search and Rescue) and learned the basic skills that he would carry through his many
years in IMSARU. George is survived by his wife, Charlotte Gunn. To the question "Why
did George never become a minister?" the answer is that he was always a minister in
everything he did and with everyone he met. He served many years on the Board of the
Nampa U.C.C. and six years on the Board of the Central Pacific Conference of the U.C.C.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 24 at the Nampa United Church of
Christ, at 55 S. Midland Blvd., Nampa 83651. A second memorial service and celebration of
George's life will be held at 2 p.m. on April 14 at the Mountain Rescue Compound at 2519
Federal Way, Boise 83705 (at the intersection of Malad and Federal Way). The family
requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to Idaho Mountain Search and
Rescue Unit, to the Nampa United Church of Christ, (addresses above) or to St. Luke's
Hospice program at 325 W. Idaho, Boise 83712.
