Thomas Gunn
The venerable servant of God, as has been announced already, is no more. He fell asleep in
Jesus on the 13thof May 1859, aged 89 years, 1 month and 3 days. He was born in Nottoway
County, Virginia April 10, 1770. While young, his father removed to Caswell County, North
Carolina, where at about the age of 18 years, he professed justifying faith in Christ and
united with the Methodist Episcopal church. He soon began to preach the gospel, but at what
precise time he was regularly licensed, we have not the means of ascertaining. He was
ordained deacon at Lynchburg, Virginia, Feb 4, 1808, by Bishop Asbury. He was ordained
elder by Bishop McKendree in Tennessee on the 4th of October. He emigrated to Tennessee
at an early age and was long a citizen of Robertson County. He raised a family, and by
industry and economy was able to provide amply for their wants and to aid each child to
make a fair start in the business of life. His latter years were rendered burdensome in some
degree because of a serious fall from his horse. His brother, Rev. James Gunn was his yokefellow,
and for many year side by side, they labored for the advancement of the Redeemer"s
case. The late Rev. William Gunn, long and favorably known in Kentucky as an efficient
itinerant preacher and a sweet singer in Israel was the son of James Gunn, and a nephew of
the subject of this notice. (Nashville Christian Advocate, July 14,1859)(Thomas and Sarah
