presidents. In 1967, he was put in charge of the Criminal Investigation Section. In 1962,
Mr. Gunn headed a committee of police officers and city officials who investigated the
Miami Police Department. After a seven-month investigation, the committee issued a
scathing report. It said the detective bureau was never planned but just fell together by
accident and that police officials refused to recognize the extent of crime in Miami. "It is
inconceivable that vice conditions can flourish in any city police department without
members of the police agency being aware of it," the report said. "He was an up-front
cop," said grandson Todd Ogden. "When he heard about corruption today, cops on the
take, cops selling badges, it burned him up big time." Born in Georgia, Mr. Gunn didn't
plan on becoming a police officer. He wanted to be a doctor, but his father's death and the
Great Depression stopped him from attending college. Instead, he looked after his mother
and younger brother. He worked with the New York shore patrol and served in World
War II before coming to Miami. He joined the Miami police force in the 1940s, when pay
was $100 a month. After retiring from the force in 1972, he headed security at Miami
International Airport and then Barry University. Last month, he moved from his North
Miami Beach home to Naples. In addition to Todd Ogden, Mr. Gunn is survived by his
daughter Donna Ogden of Naples and another grandchild. Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight,
with services at 7 p.m., at Pittman Funeral Home in Naples. Contributions can be made to
