fotografías, aunque sin una intención documental, constituyen un documento de antigüedad y valor innegable.
Así, fotografió San Miguel de Lillo en 1854 con un encuadre ligeramente lateral, el templo de
Cayo Julio Lacer, a la entrada del puente de Alcántara en 1859, el anfiteatro de Itálica (Fontanella, 1999,
200) y la tumba de los Escipiones en Tarragona 109 . Clifford llegó a Itálica con motivo de la visita de Isabel
II el 23 de Septiembre de 1862. En dicho viaje por Andalucía, la Corona utilizó la fotografía como un excelente
difusor de las mejoras y obras realizadas durante el reinado de Isabel II, en uno de sus primeros
usos propagandísticos. En este contexto, el fotógrafo inglés realizó las primeras fotografías que se conservan
de Itálica (Caballos, Fatuarte, Rodríguez, 1999, 44).
La fotografía ayudó al establecimiento de estereotipos sobre lo español. Paradigmático resulta el
encuentro entre Clifford y el escritor Andersen en la Alhambra. La Alhambra, que reunía el anhelado
exotismo y carácter oriental, era entonces uno de los principales puntos de encuentro de los fotógrafos.
En octubre de 1862, Andersen visitó la Alhambra de camino a Gibraltar. Ese día Clifford estaba tomando
fotografías, momento que Andersen relató 110 . Los fotógrafos extranjeros se centraron en pun-

the zambomba, a sort of rumblepot. A fat, but still very pretty woman with a coloured skirt, played the tambourine. The picture was
finished in a flash- a feat I cannot accomplish my description” (SOMMERGRUBER, 1995, 89).
