The decision to study, where to study, what to study and to what effect is one of the most
crucial decisions in a professional career. And there is a long way to go to find explanations for
such decisions – from the particular biographical background of individuals to the functioning of
a society’s educational system and the wider processes of social, economic and, eventually,
global change.
In this course we will approach this topic of (higher) education from several perspectives: On
the one hand emphasis will be put on objective, aggregated social and economic conditions and
effects of education in their cross-national variation, in particular on questions of social
inequality – on the other hand the subjective, individual experience, the trajectory of higher
education will be put on trial as well.
During the semester, students will carry out an empirical research project. They will use
quantitative and qualitative methods of social research, e.g. construct a questionnaire, conduct
interviews, carry out a simple statistical analysis, and write a project report. Students' active
participation is required throughout the semester.

Das wegen der Teilnehmerzahlbeschränkung erforderliche Anmeldeverfahren wird noch bekannt
gegeben.
Die Referatsthemen werden durch gesonderten Aushang an den Lehrstühlen bekannt gemacht.
Vergabe der Referate ist bereits in den Semesterferien möglich. Die verbleibenden Themen
werden in der Einführung am 15. 4. verteilt.
