The course will introduce both the aims and methods of the linguistic subdisciplines phonetics
and phonology. There will, however, be an equal concentration on the practical aspects of the
disciplines as applied to English together with a special emphasis on English intonation The
course will include a comprehensive description of English phonemes and a mastery of
transcription at an elementary level. Some use will be made of the laboratory for further
practice. The end-of-term test will include a theory section and transcription exercises.

The course will focus on theoretical and empirical issues relating to inflectional, derivational
and compounding phenomena as dealt with in structuralist and generative models. Topics to be
discussed will include the following: The concept of 'morpheme', 'allomorph' and 'morph', 'item'
and arrangement' vs. 'item and process'' - models of grammatical description,
'morphophonemics', the transformationalist-lexicalist controversy, the productivity/creativity of
word-formation, word syntax, etc.
