This course is an obligatory supplement to the lecture course on "Morphology and Syntax". It is
intended to give students
the opportunity to practice and refine their knowledge in applying analytical and descriptive
tools to the English language.

Die Prüfungsleistungen werden bis zum Beginn der Vorlesungszeit bekannt gegeben.
In the first part of this course various aspects of the meaning of linguistic expressions will be
analyzed and described:
- the internal semantic structure of individual linguistic expressions as described by
componential analysis, structural semantics, meaning postulates, and prototype theory
- the semantic relations between linguistic expressions as in synonymy, and antonymy, etc.
- the whole meaning of sentences as the sum of the meaning of the individual lexemes as well
as the grammatical and sentence semantic relations between them - the relation of linguistic
expressions or their meaning to extralinguistic reality.
The second part will deal with pragmatics, i.e. with the function of linguistic utterances and the
propositions that are expressed by them depending upon their use in specific situations.
Pragmatics thus includes, e.g., the study of deictic expressions, of speech acts, of
presuppositions and of maxims of conversation.
