The aim of this course is to introduce students to contemporary approaches to public
management. Using the New Zealand experience of New Public Management as an initial basis
for discussion, models of strategic management, their origins in private business and, most
importantly, their appropriate application in the public sector will be examined. Drawing on
literature and case studies concerning strategic management, students will develop an
understanding of relevant approaches and models and also gain an awareness of issues
specifically associated with the actual practice of strategic management in the public sector.
Course assessment is based on a class presentation (with handout) and an essay of approx.
4000 words.
