The focus of the course will be to link economic development policies to globalization and
entrepreneurship. The theory of economic development and international competitiveness will
be introduced and the causes and consequences of globalization examined. Focus will then be
turned to the local level and the strategic management of places.
Against this background, the distance learning modules developed in accordance with the
“Local Heroes” Conference in Erfurt on Sept 4, 2003 will be used (www.gruenderkonferenz.de).
The conference topics will be discussed with guest lectures who have participated at the
conference. The conference included the following areas:
? Globalization and Regionalization: Challenges for Public Policies
? Monitoring Entrepreneurship on a Global and Local Perspective
? Case Studies, e.g. Automotive Cluster Eastern Germany
? U.S. Government-Industry Partnerships for the Development of New Technologies (Case
Studies)
