Paradise Lost, the last and greatest of English epics, will be submitted to a close-reading with
particular attention paid to the intellectual, religious and political background of Milton's period
(c. 1642 - 1660). Paradise Lost is a Protestant epic on classical lines and one of the greatest
linguistic creations in English. However, students should not be discouraged by 17th century
language and thought when first reading the work.

This class is to provide a brief survey on the interaction of literature and the ideology of the
Empire from the beginnings well into the post-colonial period. Major writers such as Defoe,
Kipling, Joseph Conrad and Kureishi will be discussed in detail.
