The only problem we have with the NEW YORK TIMES praising McCourt's 1997 Pullitzer Prize
winning and best selling book - "Mr McCourt does for the town of Limerick what the young
Joyce did for Dublin: he conjures the place for us with such intimacy that we feel we've walked
its streets" - is the fact that McCourt's ANGELA'S ASHES seems to be a basically American
book. Because what McCourt does for the Town of Limerick, Samuel Clemens alias Mark Twain
with his notorious HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1884) had already done more than a hundred years
ago for his Hannibal, Missouri. And McCourt had emigrated to America not only once in his life
but twice and became an American teacher and writer, who had obviously read his HUCK FINN
also more than once. The course tries to examine the implicit intertextuality of the books by
discussing the many aspects which the two works could be compared on: autobiography,
romance and realism, American Dream, story of migration and adventure, the picaresque and
subversive, initiation story and adolescence book, tall tale humor, regionalism, colloquial and
base language.
