This course is intended to complement Prof Roessler's class "Theories and Models of mass
communication" (see separate course outline) held on Mondays from 2-6pm. It is, however,
also open to students who do not attend his class. It provides a suitable forum and specific
language support for students who would like to give a presentation on one of the theories or
models covered in Prof. Rössler's class. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to
either have a trial run for their presentations or to bounce off their ideas afterwards. In
addition, we will analyze different types of media and their effectiveness, investigate the
influence of the media on politics and look into the relationship between advertising and the
media.
Special emphasis is put on the development of speaking and writing skills, the practice of
subject-specific vocabulary and of grammatical structures.
This is the second part of a two-semester course. The course prepares for the English level III
exam with special emphasis on Media studies. This exam will be held in summer 2004.
Newcomers are welcome.

This course is designed for students of history who would like to keep up their level of English
or who are thinking of continuing their studies abroad. In this course we will look at various
texts and topics and practise study skills such as applying different reading strategies,
analyzing and evaluating information as well as writing summaries and presenting research
results.
The course relies heavily on active participation and students are encouraged to give short
presentations on topics of personal research interest.
