SECTION 05200 - STEEL JOIST AND JOIST GIRDERS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1 Specification sections, apply to this section.
1.02 SUMMARY
A. Extent of steel joists is shown on Drawings, including basic layout and type of joists and
girders required.
1.03 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED IN OTHER SECTIONS
A. The following items are described in the sections indicated. Cooperate as necessary with all
other trades to ensure proper and adequate provisions for the interface of their work with the
open-web steel joists, and to ensure timely and orderly progress of the work.
1. Supporting Structural Steel: Division 5 Section “Structural Steel.”
2. Steel Deck: Division 5 Section “Steel Deck.”
3. Metal Fabrications: Division 5 Section “Metal Fabrications.”
1.04 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings: Submit detailed drawings for review prior to fabrication, showing layout of
joist and girder units, special connections, jointing, accessories and deflections. Include mark,
number, type, location, and spacing of joists and bridging.
B. Provide calculations for joist girder prior to fabrication.
C. Provide templates or location drawings for installation of anchor bolts.
D. Provide written verification that all bolted and welded connections have been installed
correctly. See Paragraph 1.05 D. below.
1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. General: Provide joists and joist girders fabricated in compliance with Steel Joist Institute (SJI)
"Standard Specifications, Load Tables and Weight Tables for Steel Joists and Joist Girders."
B. Qualification of Field Welding: Qualify welding processes and welding operators in
accordance with the American Welding Society (AWS) "Structural Welding Code - Steel,"
AWS D1.1.
C. Inspection: Inspect joists and girders in accordance with SJI "Specifications."
D. Joists and girders welded in place are subject to inspection and testing. Expense of removing
and replacing any portion of steel joists and joist girders for testing purposes will be borne by
Owner if welds are found to be satisfactory. Removal and testing costs for deficient work shall
be the responsibility of the contractor.
1. Remove and replace work found to be defective, and provide new acceptable work at
no added cost to the Contract.
