narration depicting an image of a united past when everyone coexisted
peacefully and did their best to defend the fatherland. The war narration, as it
has been put in my material, contains components needed to pass as cultural
heritage. Cultural heritage is a marker of something that is regarded as valuable
and therefore as something that should be preserved. A value that has been
ascribed to the war narration by younger generations is that it is about to be
forgotten since the once who witnessed its events are nowadays so old. The
tradition is dying out, so to speak, and must be preserved for the coming
generations—a line of thought present among the early collectors of folklore.
Because of this perceived value, many of the people who have asked me about
my research have stated their view of the importance of collecting the war
narration and disseminating it to a larger audience that is as ignorant as I was
about “how it really was during the war”.
