APROXIMACIÓN A LOS EFECTOS DE
LAS ACTIVIDADES ANTRÓPICAS SOBRE LA FAUNA
DE VERTEBRADOS DEL PÁRAMO COLOMBIANO

El páramo es un ecosistema de gran importancia para Colombia, que en las últimas décadas
ha sufrido con mayor severidad el impacto de las actividades humanas. Aunque se han
realizado algunos estudios sobre la fauna de páramo, es muy poco lo que se conoce de los
efectos de estas actividades sobre los vertebrados que lo habitan. En esta contribución se
definieron algunas de las que pueden afectar a la fauna de vertebrados en los páramos:
cacería, quemas, agricultura, ganadería, construcción de infraestructura, introducción de especies
de fauna, cultivos ilícitos, conflicto armado, turismo y cambio climático. Se realizaron
entrevistas a especialistas de cada grupo (anfibios, reptiles, aves y mamíferos), para determinar
el porcentaje de especies que son afectadas por cada actividad antrópica y se encontró
que las actividades humanas que más afectan a los vertebrados son la agricultura, la fumigación
de cultivos ilícitos, las quemas y la construcción de embalses. Estas pueden afectar hasta
el 50 % o más de las especies en cada uno de los grupos de vertebrados. El grupo que se ve
más afectado por el hombre es el de los mamíferos, posiblemente por su gran diversidad
de formas y tamaños, porque ocupan una gran variedad de nichos y porque están estrechamente
relacionados con el hombre. Para disminuir los efectos de estas actividades es necesario:
zonificar el posible uso de las áreas de páramo, identificar especies promisorias,
implementar planes de conservación y manejo, realizar estudios faunísticos que aborden
detalladamente el problema aquí tratado y por último la educación a todo nivel.

ABSTRACT
Paramo is an important ecosystem that has been affected by human activities with more
severing during the last decades. Although several studies dealing with the paramo’s fauna has
been conducted, the effects of human activities on the vertebrates fauna is poorly known. In
this paper we analyzed how the following activities are affecting the paramo’s vertebrates:
hunting, burning, agriculture, cattle raising, development, fauna introduction, illicit crops, heavy
fighting and global climatic change. We conducted interviews to specialists in each group
(amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals), in order to obtain the percentage of affected
species for each one of the human activities, above mentioned. We found that agriculture, illicit
crops fumigation, burning and development, were the human activities that affect vertebrates
the most. These human activities affect more than 50 % of the species. Mammals are the
most affected by human activities. This may happen because mammals exhibit a great
diversity of size and shape, they live in different type of habitats, and because they are
very close to people. In order to diminish the human activities’ effect it is necessary to plan
a zoning of land uses, to identify promising species, to carry out conservation and
management plans, to conduct fauna detailed studies, concerning the problem analyzed
here, and finally, all levels education is needed.
