with him to the chamber door, and though Francis<br />

objected, brought him to the door of the second<br />

chamber, Avlierewith great cérémonies they parted.<br />

On returning to his chamber, the Pope called me<br />

and the Datary read the rest of the provocation,<br />

interrupted many tirnes by the Pope with conimerits,<br />

to ease his own mind, especially touching the king's<br />

late mariage with the présent queen, and the process<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> by the Archbishop of Canterbury. I then<br />

intimated the two appeals ma<strong>de</strong> by the king before<br />

my lord of Winchester. Duringthe readingof them,<br />

Cardinal <strong>de</strong> Medicis came in, and stood bare-heahed,<br />

apparently Avon<strong>de</strong>ring that the Pope Avasso<br />

much moved. The Pope said that it was a matter of<br />

so much weight that lie must consult the Cardinals<br />

in Consistory. I <strong>de</strong>sired to hâve the documents<br />

again, to make intimation to the Cardinals. His<br />

Holiness at lirst refused, but, on my insisting, said<br />

I should hâve an ansAver to my pétition, as Avellas<br />

to the appeal after lie had consulted the Cardinals.<br />

I then left, about 8 o'clock, having remained more<br />

than three hours, and reported what I had done to<br />

my lord of Winchester and the other ambassadors.<br />
