La consciencia considerada como una función del encéfalo Dr. Enrique Vera de la Puente (†), neurólogo conductual y Dr. Rafael Blanco Menéndez, psicólogo clínico y neuropsicólogo RESUMEN: En el presente estudio se analizan las relaciones entre la representación mental en imágenes visuales (RMIV) y la aparición de la consciencia en los animales y en el hombre. Se revisa la evidencia acerca de la existencia de actividad onírica en otros animales distintos del hombre. Se considera, asimismo, posibles explicaciones de este fenómeno, de carácter biofísico. También se analiza el papel que ha jugado la actividad consciente de los organismos a lo largo del proceso evolutivo. Además, la relación entre la RMIV y determinados aspectos cognitivos son también analizados, a la luz de diversas aportaciones teóricas provenientes de investigaciones evolutivas y comparadas. ABSTRACT: This research analyzes the relationships between visual mental imagery (VMI) and the emergence of consciousness in animals and man. Evidence about the existence of dream activity in other animals apart from the human, is revised. Also, possible explanations of biophysical type of this phenomenon are considered, too. Also, the role of conscious activity of the organisms in evolution is also analyzed. Moreover, the relationship between VMI and some cognitive aspects are also analyzed, considering diverse theoretical evidence, coming from developmental and comparative studies. <strong>Eikasia</strong>.
