end in itself. It is true th<strong>at</strong> by invoking the principles of<br />

die idealist theory of the St<strong>at</strong>e an endeavour is made to<br />

show th<strong>at</strong> in subordin<strong>at</strong>ing: himself to the St<strong>at</strong>e the<br />

individual is realizing his true n<strong>at</strong>ure. But Fascism would<br />

not, I imagine, m*^ta^ th<strong>at</strong> any gristing St<strong>at</strong>e is an ideal<br />

one and the theory, it will be remembered, 1 asserts th<strong>at</strong><br />

it is only in the St<strong>at</strong>e as such, th<strong>at</strong> is to say, in the ideal St<strong>at</strong>e,<br />

th<strong>at</strong> localiz<strong>at</strong>ion of the self's true n<strong>at</strong>ure through subordin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

to the St<strong>at</strong>e is achieved. In practice the subordin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of the individual becomes a subordin<strong>at</strong>ion to the St<strong>at</strong>e for<br />

tkt s*b of 0* Stote. "All individuals or groups," says<br />

Mussolini, "are rel<strong>at</strong>ive, only to be conceived of in their<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ion to the St<strong>at</strong>e." The end of the individual is, then,<br />

to be found only in the end of the St<strong>at</strong>e. Wh<strong>at</strong>, then,<br />

is the end of the St<strong>at</strong>e? Mussolini answer* by bluntly<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the fascist St<strong>at</strong>e is "an embodied will to<br />

announcing<br />

power and government";<br />

it is in the interests of this<br />

"embodied will" th<strong>at</strong> Fascism considers itself entitled to<br />

subordin<strong>at</strong>e the individual to the St<strong>at</strong>e. Over whom are<br />

the "power and government" exercised? Over other<br />

St<strong>at</strong>es abroad and over the mass of inferior individual*<br />

<strong>at</strong> home. Thus the evolution of powerful individuals in<br />

the community of individuals and of powerful n<strong>at</strong>ions in<br />

the community of n<strong>at</strong>ions it the ultim<strong>at</strong>e end to the<br />

pursuit of which everything else must be subordin<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />
