laken from the fire-chambers of Structures P-7 and S-2, and from this
region of the central chamber of J-17, and suggest that the sherd wall at
the back was a constant feature. Monolithic jambs were found not only
in N -1 but in P-7 and, on a smaller scale, in S-2. It is less likely, but
possible, that these occur in all cases also. The stone lintel would appear
necessar)' in all cases, in view of the proximity of fire. These were misserJ
in Structures J -17, S-2, and P-7, probably beca use they were fire-cracked
(o sl11all fragments, and were not being particularl)' searched for.
OUTER ROQil ..[ OR ROOMS.
The units thus far described, the central chamber and its includecl
fire-chamber, appear to hang together as one com plex, characterized by
relatiw~ darkness, lack of ventilation ancl general closeness, resulting
from smal! size, lowness of ceiling, and a single tiny doorway. They
appear to be always integrated with one or more additional chambers in
which these characteristics are reversed, doorways in the front fac'ade at
least being plentiful, their height and width probably normal or more
than usual, the rooms large.
The central chamber of S tructure N-1 was built out from the rear
\yallof such an outer chamber, which .'vas aboL1t 15.00 m long and abrJllt
6.80 m wide.Without doorways at the rear and possibly the sides, there
was no front wall. The roof was probably supported here on wooden·
posts. In an)' case the OL1ter chamber was by co mparison light and airy.
It containecl the central chamber much as the latter contained the iire·
chamber. This arrangEment stems to have occured in Structures
J-17, 0-4, R-13, S-2 and S4. In P-7 a front open galler)' and two lateral
rooms at the rear completely surrouncl the central chamber, at the back
..
as well as at front ancl sides. Apparently the S-19 central chamber hac1
élss.ociated rooms 011 either side. This is the only case where ou r surfiL-: e
studies indicate that the front wall of the central chamber \Vas probably
in the facade of the building as a whole.
Our knowledge of these ollter room s is as yet vny incomplete.
