As can be seen in the acompany ing diagram, the coldest recorded temperatures
of Fuegia a re - 6.()0 at Vshuaia, + 11.0° a t P unta Arenas,
and + 25" at Evangelastus Island. Thus in only parts of Fuegia does
the thermometer ever register zero 01' below, whereas in other parts it
never falls to less than 25° obove zero. The coldest weather evEr known
tohave been experienced by the Fuegians, therefore, is from 88" to 119°
wanner than the extreme cold recorded in Siberia (- 94°), from 49° to
80" warmer than P oint Barrow (- 55°) or Archangel (- 53°), 16" to
48° wO,nner than Stockholm (- 22°), or Angmagsalik (- 23'0), and even
8° to 39° 'wornner than the extreme cold at P aris (- 14°).
On the other hand although the extremes in hot weather in Fuegia
are not as great as those in many of the other areas the summer months
are characterized nevertheless by temperatures as high as 86" whlch is
greater than the extremes recordecl at Vestmanno, I celand (71°), Point
Barrow (75°) or Angmagsalik (78").
Now these slatistics are instructive for not only do we fine! that the
temperatures of Tierra del Fuego are fairly equitable and comparable
wi th those in areas considered fa vorable for inhabi tation but al so tha t
they are in clecided contrast \Vith the recorc1ed tempera tures of antarctica
where the mean annual temperatures range from 35° to 55° colder and
where the extreme winter readings' (Cape Adair, - 43°; Little America,
