reached America before the la st great glaciation (W'Ürm-'Wisconsin)
would have to be of the Lithic horizon, or conversely any Lithic horizolJ
in North America must in origin antedate the :W'ürm-\i\Tiscollsin glaciation.
Originating in Á-\frica, the Osteic horizoll begills to spread into Europe
and western Asia at about the time of the Achell glacial retreat. It bring:;
in the use of bone in implement making. AwJs, spatulae, needles, scepters,
weapon points, blades, gravers, harpoolls and the c1art-thrower
must have hac1 their beginning during the Osteic. The Upper Palaeolith ic
is the European representative of this horizon. Somewhere be~ween the
Baltic and Gschnitz glacial episodes a stage of the Osteic horizon appear;;
