bears a closer resunblance to the pottery of Marajo Island than any other
piece of Santarem ceramics known to me.
Regarcling the human figurin es, these are of two very difterent types.
Those ShOWIl in (photo 1), espeeially the larger one in the eenter, 14.5 em.
high, élnd those in Nord'ó nskiold, Plate XXXV, are oí the wide-spread type
considered by Spinden as developed from archaic art. They resemble
figurines of Costa Rica and Chiriqui so closely that there can be little
doubt of the genetic relationship. If the sex is identifiab!e, they are
female, with the genital region shown by a triangle. They are seated with
¡h e thick short legs outpreacl and ta~ring to points. They are hollow
and probably had rattling pellets within. The hair is represented by
incisecl lines ancl they are further deeorated with black paintecl lines and

red fie~ds apparently Véry similar to the decoration of southern Central
.\merican figurines. Other figurines, like those shown to the sides in
(photo 1) are apparenHy ruder examples of the same type.
That to the

decoralion.
The ma!e f,!;ur:nes, such as those shown in (photo J), are of a very
different type, much more naturalistie a ncl apparently uneonnected with
the widespreacl "arehaie" type. Théy are ex.cellent examples of pictorial
Jl1 üdeling, the figures shown in nat ural nusymmetrieal postures. Th ·~
lhree shown are all squatting and me?s ure from 5 to 12 cm. in height.
The genital s are prominent and in two cases the man is holding them as
