in retrie (14). Upon local injedion in the lateral sides of the alpha-lobes, a signifiantly
reduced CR rate ks recorded in the retrieval test. 30 minutes after injeding 5 nl
of 1x104 M 5-HT even a fadlitatory effed 'can be measmed, however, this effed is
reversible. F a higler concentration (1x10-4 M, 5 1) is injected into the alpha-lobes,
a drastic blocking effect is deteded in tlte storage test. 'lhese èesults are supported by
the fmding lnt pflzlorophenylnlnnine (PCPA) (a blocker of the 5-HT synthesis
enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase) application enhances the CR (tmpublished observation,
Sugawa). The injection into the antermal-lobes has no efed in the storage test
(unpublished observation, Sugawa).
OA: has no negative inlluenœ on mem ory formation and on retrieval when
globaly Kjeded (11). However, local injedion of OA (1x10 -6 M, 2-3 n1) in the
Pedunculi (Ped) results in a fadlitatory action in both storage and retrieval tests, but
no effect is deteded when OA is injeded into the alpha-lobes. Syperphrine, a Nmethylated
analogue of OA and an agonist for the OA receptor, has a similnr effect as
OA if applied into the Ped. Phentobmine, an alphazedrenargic receptor antagonist
and general OA receptor blocker, reduces the memory formation in the Ped (14).
A>odative lenrnlng in Y s witlout me room bodies in Bra?l without Corcoo do
The present pharmacologcal studies suggest thnt the mlthroom bodies
(mduncli, alpha-lobes) of the bee brain aze a centir of modalities between diferent
sensory and motor elements arid a readeut of associative learning and memory. OA
injedion into the Ped, the input reson of mltqhroon bodies, leads to the enhnncement
of memory storage and retrieval. OA application into the dorsal lobus in the deutocerebrum'
shows the facilitatory effect on drinking . The innuence of NA is measured
as enhnncement of learning, especially mem6ry storagi in the alpha-lobes, the output
region of the mm hroom bodies. However, no effed is observed upon application into
the antennal-lobes. 5-HT, wltich may be a physioloscal antagohist for NA/OA in the
bee brains, elidtes in the alpha-lobm an inhibitory effect both in memory fonm tion
and retrieval. Tlzis effect does not occur in the antennal-tmbus. Since some 5-HT
reactive neurons, which are invo'lved in odor conditioning , have been identiûed
recently (4), the role 5-HT plays in learning and memory of honeybee might be
understood in the near future. To date DA has not been investigated by local injection
into the m ltqlroom bodies. Althouglt the mechanisnzs of information procese g is not
known at the netlrond level, ed., whether the transmissioù of the CS and US from the
deutocerebrum to the muhroom bodies occm s sequentialy lxqing the same pathway
or in parallel using separate pathways, it ks quite probable that the CS and US are
intergrated and paired in the mllnhgoom bodies.
Are Ge phnrmacoloscal proftles and behavioral patterns in memory storage
and retrieu l coincident?
