CHAPTER 47 Doppler Sonography of the Brain in Children 1623

in this area to better understand the potential beneits of TCD

in the management of these patients. 194,195

Another area of research is the use of TCD in the evaluation

of the cognitive function of children. Various studies have associated

cerebrovascular function using TCD measurements with

cognitive performance. In neonates, a decrease in blood low

velocities is associated with poor cognitive performance and in

patients with SCD, an increase in low velocities is associated

with poor outcomes. 102,196
