ekufundeni ukufunda nokubhala (literacy), kanti ukufunda nokubhala (literacy)<br />

kungukhiye ekufundeni izifundo (learning) komntwana.<br />

UMnyango wezeMfundo eNingizimu Afrika uyithatha njengento esemqoka nebaluleke<br />

kakhulu indaba yokufunda okubhaliwe kubantwana, njengoba kubonakala ukuthi ikhona<br />

inkinga yokungakwazi ukufunda nokubhala kubantwana eNingizimu Afrika. Nakuba la<br />

magama ecishe asebenze ngokufana, kodwa uMcEachern (1990) ugcizelela ukuthi la<br />

magama awafani, awasho okufanayo nakuba ehlobene. Ubeka ukuthi i-literacy<br />

ihlanganisa nayo i-reading, njengoba i-literacy isho ukuba nolwazi lokufunda nokubhala<br />

lapho ichazwa ngokwejwayelekile, nakuba zikhona ziziningi izincazelo zaleli gama.<br />

Abanye abacwaningi babuka i-‘literacy’ njengengenabudlelwano ne-‘reading’,<br />

ezihambela nje yodwa futhi engeke yafundiswa ngokuhlanganiswa ne-reading. Lokhu<br />

bakwenza njengalabo abangavumelani ngokuthi ukufunda umbhalo (reading)<br />

kuyahambisana nokubhala (writing). Kodwa-ke ngokwemfundo yasesikoleni igama elithi<br />

‘literacy’ lichaza ukufunda okubhaliwe kanye nokubhala okusezingeni lokuba kuvumele<br />

umfundi ukuba akwazi ukufunda nokubhala ngokuhambisana nezinga lakhe lokukhula<br />

kanye nebanga akulo. Ngakho-ke mayelana nokufunda izifundo (learning) komntwana,<br />

umntwana kumele akwazi ukufunda umbhalo nokubhala; ngale ndlela abe ‘literate’,<br />

ukuze aphumelele emfundweni yakhe. UMolefe (2008) ugcizelela ukuthi:<br />

The close connection between reading, writing, speaking and listening are<br />

well understood to incorporate all aspects <strong>of</strong> literate behaviour. Children build<br />

on oral language knowledge as they learn to read and write; they develop a<br />

key understanding about reading, especially phonics through writing; and they<br />

extend their writing range through reading (p.1).<br />

Ngala mazwi acashunwe ngenhla, umcwaningi ugcizelela ukuthi ukuze umuntu akwazi<br />

ukufunda nokubhala, kokubili ukufunda okubhaliwe kanye nokubhala kumele<br />

kuthuthukiswe, futhi kungabukeli phansi ukukhuluma nokulalela ngoba kukonke lokhu<br />

kunomthelela ekufundeni kwengane ukufunda okubhaliwe. Ngale ndlela, igama elithi<br />

‘literacy’ (ukufunda nokubhala/ulwazi lokufunda nokubhala) kulo msebenzi lingebukwe<br />
