ULevine nabanye (2000) bathi: “The ability to read academic texts is considered one <strong>of</strong><br />

the most important skills that university students need to acquire” (p.1). Ukufunda<br />

okubhaliwe ngokuqondisisa yiyona nhloso yokufunda umbhalo (Durkin, 1993, p. 47),<br />

okungabalulekile nje ekutheni umfundi afunde nezinye izifundo kuphela, kodwa<br />

empilweni yomuntu yonke yemfundo eyimpumelelo, njengoba umuntu ufunda aze afe<br />

(Pritchard et al, 1999; Strydom, 1997). UBalfour (2002, p.168), uthi:<br />

Students have a serious problem with comprehension <strong>of</strong> written material in<br />

English. Such a problem is serious because this skill is vital in processing<br />

information at university level. It is for this reason that a greater focus on<br />

the pedagogy <strong>of</strong> reading skills be taken into account at a primary school<br />

level.<br />

ubuye achaze ukuthi ama-inferencing abilities ngesikhathi umfundi efunda, anabo<br />

ubudlelwane nokwenza kwakhe emsebenzini wakhe wesikole. Lokhu kubonakala kulabo<br />

bafundi abafunda kahle okubhaliwe ukuthi benza kangcono kakhulu nakweminye<br />

imisebenzi yesikole, ngenxa yokuthi ukufunda okubhaliwe yikhona okuyisisekelo<br />

sokufunda umfundi akudingayo ukuze aphumelele esikoleni kunoma yiliphi izinga<br />

lemfundo (Pretorius, 2000).<br />

Kanti kolunye ucwaningo olwenziwa nguMachet benoPretorius (2004), lwaluhlola<br />

ubudlelwano phakathi kokufunda okubhaliwe kanye nokubhala kubafundi bebanga<br />

lokuqala, kanye nendlela isikole esikulungele ngayo ukufundisa abantwana ukufunda<br />

okubhaliwe. Kanjalo nababekwenza othisha nendlela ababekubuka ngayo ukufundisa<br />

ukufunda okubhaliwe kanye nokubhala, kwavela ukuthi izinto nezimo ezizungeze<br />

umntwana, yizona ezinomthelela ekwenzeni kwakhe lapho efunda okubhaliwe (Pretorius,<br />
