INTRODUCTION

British music therapy training has traditionally used the
model of a one-year full-time course usually following 3
years of undergraduate music (or related) studies at a
university, conservatoire or school of education. The
Guildhall School of Music and Drama's music therapy
course pioneered this model in Britain under the
direction of Juliette Alvin and continues in this way in the
199Os. However, preparing music therapy students for
professional work in one short year is a challenging
task. Colleagues in Europe, USA, Australia and
elsewhere who have established longer training periods
