British music therapy training has traditionally used the<br />

model <strong>of</strong> a one-year full-time course usually following 3<br />

years <strong>of</strong> undergraduate music (or related) studies at a<br />

university, conservatoire or school <strong>of</strong> education. The<br />

Guildhall School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> and Drama's music therapy<br />

course pioneered this model in Britain under the<br />

direction <strong>of</strong> Juliette Alvin and continues in this way in the<br />

199Os. However, preparing music therapy students for<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional work in one short year is a challenging<br />

task. Colleagues in Europe, USA, Australia and<br />

elsewhere who have established longer training periods<br />
