any relic of memory tnrough offering music familiar to
her previous life. Still the therapy was not progressing
as it snould. it felt stuck and lacking direction.
Two events re-directed me from this feeling of being
immersed in the situation. The first was a supervision
session with a senior music therapist who after watching
video tapes of Kate 's sessions identified that I was
allowing Kate's strength and greedy demand (hints of
Melanie Klein 's greedy infant ) to dominate. I was
allowing involvement in each therapy session to be so
complete that I had been losing sight of direction.
The second event that prompted a re-direction was
through discussion with staff regarding a plan to reduce
Kate 's medication. Staff wanted to find out who Kate
really was " let 's get rid of some of the masking effects
of tranquillizers.'

In response and support of monitoring the reduction of
medication I set out to survey some behavioural
indicators of Kate 's condition.
SURVEY:
The survey was used to give some observational
support to the impressions that staff received from Kate
during their daily exchanges with her. it was not
intended as a valid piece of experimental research and
it was designed to be accessible and not a chore tor
staff.
Staff were asked to record the occurrence of various
selected behaviours daily as frecuently, sometimes or
none.
