paramedical, the psychosocial department, the
departmet who looks after the care of the children, the
technical department and the school.
Musictherapy belongs to the psycho-social department.
In 12 of the 27 rehabilitationcentres in The Nederlands
music-therapy is part of the treatment. The
musictherapist has a parttime appointment usually 50-
70 per cent.
INTRODUCTION
In music-therapy in The Netherlands, it is not the
limitations but the abilities of a child which form the core
for treatment. This appears to contradict the title "In
motion". A music-therapeutical approach in the
rehabilitation of physically handicapped children. The
abilities of these children to move are, after all, often
extremely limited or lacking altogether. In this

connection, however, much more is meant than just
muscular movement, namely social and emotional
movement. By social movement we mean the
movement which takes place between the different
individuals, based on attention and reaction, contact
and communication. Emotional movement is the
movement of inner emotions which can be brought out,
where by the expression and release of feelings is the
main concern.
These various forms of movement are all of importance
in the development of children in general and of
physically handicapped children in particular. This
applies as much to physical as to social and emotional
development. Being in motion means development and
growth in other words: life.
Although these aspects of development are interwoven
as they are continually influencing eachother - both in a
positive as well as in a negative sense - a distinction
between them is often made in the rehabilitation of
