paramedical, the psychosocial department, the<br />

departmet who looks after the care <strong>of</strong> the children, the<br />

technical department and the school.<br />

<strong>Music</strong>therapy belongs to the psycho-social department.<br />

In 12 <strong>of</strong> the 27 rehabilitationcentres in The Nederlands<br />

music-therapy is part <strong>of</strong> the treatment. The<br />

musictherapist has a parttime appointment usually 50-<br />

70 per cent.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

In music-therapy in The Netherlands, it is not the<br />

limitations but the abilities <strong>of</strong> a child which form the core<br />

for treatment. This appears to contradict the title "In<br />

motion". A music-therapeutical approach in the<br />

rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> physically handicapped children. The<br />

abilities <strong>of</strong> these children to move are, after all, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

extremely limited or lacking altogether. In this<br />

connection, however, much more is meant than just<br />

muscular movement, namely social and emotional<br />

movement. By social movement we mean the<br />

movement which takes place between the different<br />

individuals, based on attention and reaction, contact<br />

and communication. Emotional movement is the<br />

movement <strong>of</strong> inner emotions which can be brought out,<br />

where by the expression and release <strong>of</strong> feelings is the<br />

main concern.<br />

These various forms <strong>of</strong> movement are all <strong>of</strong> importance<br />

in the development <strong>of</strong> children in general and <strong>of</strong><br />

physically handicapped children in particular. This<br />

applies as much to physical as to social and emotional<br />

development. Being in motion means development and<br />

growth in other words: life.<br />

Although these aspects <strong>of</strong> development are interwoven<br />

as they are continually influencing eachother - both in a<br />

positive as well as in a negative sense - a distinction<br />

between them is <strong>of</strong>ten made in the rehabilitation <strong>of</strong>
