While working with depressive patients, receptive music<br />

therapy can be indicated. In one method <strong>of</strong> music<br />

therapy it is stated that a specific piece <strong>of</strong> music evokes<br />

a specific "value", which is a subject one considers to be<br />

important in one's life. From this, the following research<br />

questions were deduced; is there a permanent<br />

connection between specific excerpts <strong>of</strong> music and<br />

specific values for depressive patients? If so, what are<br />

the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the musical excerpts connected<br />

with a specific value? Is there a certain hierarchy in<br />

these characterics?<br />

Participants in the research programme were<br />

depressive patients <strong>of</strong> two psychiatric hospital in The<br />

Hague, (The Netherlands). The research was divided<br />

into a pre-test and a main test. In the pre-test, a list <strong>of</strong> 15<br />

items referring to values and a questionnaire about<br />

personal characteristics were developed by means <strong>of</strong><br />

statistical analysis. Besides, 16 musical excerpts <strong>of</strong><br />

different styles <strong>of</strong> music and emotion contents were<br />

selected.<br />

In the main test, depressive patients listened to several<br />

musical excerpts and indicated the values which had a<br />

personal meaning for them. By means <strong>of</strong> statistical<br />

analysis, the research team searched for patterns <strong>of</strong><br />

values, clusters <strong>of</strong> musical excerpts and the connection<br />

between the two
