observer) and Suzanne Langer (aesthetics
philosopher) that I began to comprehend the profound
connection between music and human subjective
experience and thus develop the theretical foundation I
needed.
As Stern's work helps me understand our experiential
life, Lange's work helps me understand the essence of
music and its relation to experiential life. Langer's work
is to complex for me to synthesize but I will mention
concepts that synchronize beautifully with Stern's work.
For Langer music is not synonymous with emotion but
because music sounds so much the way emotions feel
that we mistake music as emotions proper. However,
this similarity allows us to use music to symbolize our
subjective realm and thus to give us insight into the
organic patterns and processes of our inner of motion
and rest, tension and release, excitation, sudden
change, etc. These patterns of tension and resolution
