at yourself and laugh, tuning into your inner rhythm and<br />

focusing.<br />

- the mention in the constructs <strong>of</strong> a key philosophy<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Centre, namely for the residents to look after<br />

themselves by giving priority to their real needs, eg.<br />

references to sensitivity and gentleness (with<br />

ourselves), to strengthening and being positive.<br />

- post-session constructs reflect the experience <strong>of</strong><br />

several <strong>of</strong> the residents who discovered, or<br />

rediscovered, a talent for making music with mention <strong>of</strong><br />

unknown talents, discovering potential and <strong>of</strong> increased<br />

confidence after having played in the session. For some<br />

residents there was an unexpected pleasure to find that<br />

they could play the instruments they had explored in the<br />

session; for others it reminded them <strong>of</strong> music making<br />

they had taken part in the past. Some residents stated<br />

that they now intended to take up musíc again.<br />

The following are supportive points arising from the<br />

interviews and observations during the sessions. There<br />

were many personal insights gained by the residents<br />

during the music therapy:<br />

Resident A felt frustrated when playing the drum; she<br />

lived with a pr<strong>of</strong>essional musician and she herself had<br />

stoppedplayingthe violin. She was able to ask herself<br />

why she stopped playing commenting that something<br />

positive had come out <strong>of</strong> the frustration.<br />

Resident B mentioned in her interview that she had felt<br />

nervous before the session with a 'problem with music.'<br />

During the session she realised that since her discovery<br />

<strong>of</strong> her illness she had suppressed a love <strong>of</strong> music. She<br />

also had the insight during the session that this 'shutting<br />

down' to music was mirrored in the way she did not<br />

listen to her own body, putting <strong>of</strong>f attending to her
