songs, a very important element <strong>of</strong> the so-called basic<br />

traditional popular music.<br />

Such material witnesses the passage from the word to<br />

singing, which is fundamental in popular communication<br />

and is able to sublimate and turn in instinctual energies<br />

into socially accepted expressions and behaviours in<br />

acreative way.<br />

This is what actually happens in music therapy.<br />

The improvisation, the variation, the repetition and the<br />

creativity peculiar to popular music allow a free use <strong>of</strong><br />

the sound material, a part from a specific<br />

musical competence.<br />

REPETITION AND VARIATION<br />

(S.4) The creative repetition and variation are two<br />

essential aspects for man. One example could be the<br />

behaviour chosen by the child during his anal phase<br />

and his Oedipus period. He <strong>of</strong>ten tries to control his<br />

anguish through rituals and repetitive behaviours linked<br />

to particular moments <strong>of</strong> the day, just like the rites which<br />

are linked to time and periods for primitive populations.<br />

These processes are based on archaic psycological<br />

mechanisms, such as, isolation, control; retroactive<br />

magic annulment.<br />

In psychopathology the obsessive behaviours seem to<br />

be the only means to assure the persistence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

object and the sense <strong>of</strong> individuality. Conversely, the<br />

variaton represents a disillusion about the constancy <strong>of</strong><br />

the object.<br />

During this "creative" phases the client substitutes the<br />

primitive illusion <strong>of</strong> fusion with an intermediary area, the
