The reconciliation <strong>of</strong> the Shadow and the anima-animus<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> ourselves can occur through dream work, and<br />

also through therapeutic processes which recognise<br />

and respect symbolism. The Bonny method <strong>of</strong> Guided<br />

Imagery and <strong>Music</strong> (Bonny, 1978 a and b) is one such<br />

therapeutic modality.<br />

Guided Imagery and <strong>Music</strong> (G.I.M.) is a method <strong>of</strong><br />

therapy in which classical music is used to evoke and<br />

stimulate imagery in the client, so that self exploration<br />

and personal growth can occur.<br />

G.I.M. involves a one-to-one relationship between<br />

therapist and individual ciient over a number (series) <strong>of</strong><br />

sessions. Typically each G . I. M . session lasts 1 1/2 - 2<br />

hours and involves a pre-music discussion, in which the<br />

therapist and client clarify the issue <strong>of</strong> focus for the<br />

session. A relaxation induction is given, individually<br />

tailored to the needs <strong>of</strong> the client, and the client moves<br />

into a deeply relaxed state with eyes closed. At the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the induction a focus is given to bridge the relaxation<br />

with the music and the flow <strong>of</strong> imagery.<br />

The therapist chooses a tape <strong>of</strong> approximately 30-40<br />

minutes duration.The client listens to the music and is<br />

encouraged to share images, impressions, fantasies,<br />

and/or feelings as they occur in response to the music.<br />

The therapist makes a written transcript <strong>of</strong> the imagery<br />

and encourages the experience through appropriate<br />

interventions. These interventions may be supportive,<br />

they may seek clarification, or they may allow the client<br />

to hold an image or feeling for a period <strong>of</strong> time to<br />

experience it fully. At the end <strong>of</strong> the music tape, the<br />

therapist brings the client back to an alert state. The
