Pair music with selected bi<strong>of</strong>eedback procedures for<br />

specific physiological problem. Noncontingent<br />

background music may be used to enhance patient's<br />

ability to relax or contingent music may be used as<br />

reinforcement for patient maintaining desired<br />

physiological response.<br />

Transfer ability to relax from the bi<strong>of</strong>eedback clinic to<br />

other locations through the use <strong>of</strong> procedures that can<br />

be paired with music in any setting (home, work, car,<br />

etc.).<br />

Reinforce relaxation, desired physiologic state, and<br />

positive verbalizations about improvement.<br />

Technique 7. Group <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong><br />

<strong>Music</strong> Function:<br />

To provide pleasurable and positive interpersonal<br />

interactions.<br />

Therapeutic Objectives:<br />

• Reduction <strong>of</strong> depression/anxiety due to isolation.<br />

• Increased pleasure and feelings <strong>of</strong> well-being.<br />

Diagnoses:<br />

• Patients capable <strong>of</strong> joining a group and desiring to do<br />

so, especially children and persons with long-term<br />

hospitalization. <strong>Music</strong> used for pleasure, group<br />

interaction and to reduce stress <strong>of</strong> hospitalization<br />

(Bailey, 1983; Froelich, 1984; Gol<strong>of</strong>f, 1981).<br />

Documentation:<br />

Record one or more <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

• Physiological: Pulse (self-monitored).<br />

• Behaviorally Observed: Pleasure responses, such as<br />

smiling or laughing; positive verbalizations free <strong>of</strong><br />

"illness" content; time spent in group and out <strong>of</strong> hospital<br />

room.
