Psychological-developmental assessment by Lorna<br />

Wing's clinic took place when Steven was 4.1 years old<br />

(a year after he had begun music therapy, and 6<br />

months after he had begun attending a special school<br />

for children with severe learning disabilities). His mental<br />

age equivalent (Merrill-Palmer Scale) was scored at 3<br />

years, a year behind his chronological age. His play age<br />

(Lowe and Costello Symbolic Play Test) was only 23<br />

months, with a raw score <strong>of</strong> 13 months. However,<br />

beginnings <strong>of</strong> imaginative play were noted as unusual in<br />

view <strong>of</strong> the overall results. A diagnosis <strong>of</strong> early childhood<br />

autism in the classic form described by Kanner was<br />

given.<br />
