3. Scholastic sphere<br />

In Italy, as opposed to all other European Countries, the<br />

law says that handicapped children should be<br />

integrated in normal schools. Thus, the special schools<br />

have been eliminated along with the relative specialized<br />

courses provided by the teaching personnel<br />

Scholastic insertion is carried out by a specific<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional figure (called a "support teacher"),<br />

designated to each child on the basis <strong>of</strong> a health<br />

certificate and depending on the provincial Education<br />

Board, a local institution that governs state schools (the<br />

few existing private schools have no bearing on the<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> this discourse, and do not in fact keep any<br />

handicapped children)" The support teachers are<br />

chosen from a list compiled by the Education Board,<br />

according to the qualifications acquired after following<br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>essional formation courses promoted by the<br />

same Education Board or by private institutions which<br />

have been recognized by the state.<br />

As far as the school environment is concerned, the MTA<br />

services come under two aspects:<br />

a) as a specialistic service in relation to the interaction<br />

with the health and/or socio-welfare services; in this<br />

case the pr<strong>of</strong>essional image <strong>of</strong> the MTA must be<br />

developed keeping in mind the previous considerations.<br />

In the primary school New Programme we read: "In the<br />

sphere <strong>of</strong> the activities for sound and music education<br />

one must bear in mind the value that Possible specialist<br />

musical therapy services can assume aimed at the<br />

handicapped" (D.P.R. 12 February 1985 n.104, G.U.<br />

n.76 <strong>of</strong> the 29.03.1985, s.o.)<br />

b) as a characterizing element in the teacher activities,<br />

and therefore as a service managed by the teaching
