3. Scholastic sphere
In Italy, as opposed to all other European Countries, the
law says that handicapped children should be
integrated in normal schools. Thus, the special schools
have been eliminated along with the relative specialized
courses provided by the teaching personnel
Scholastic insertion is carried out by a specific
professional figure (called a "support teacher"),
designated to each child on the basis of a health
certificate and depending on the provincial Education
Board, a local institution that governs state schools (the
few existing private schools have no bearing on the
purpose of this discourse, and do not in fact keep any
handicapped children)" The support teachers are
chosen from a list compiled by the Education Board,
according to the qualifications acquired after following

the professional formation courses promoted by the
same Education Board or by private institutions which
have been recognized by the state.
As far as the school environment is concerned, the MTA
services come under two aspects:
a) as a specialistic service in relation to the interaction
with the health and/or socio-welfare services; in this
case the professional image of the MTA must be
developed keeping in mind the previous considerations.
In the primary school New Programme we read: "In the
sphere of the activities for sound and music education
one must bear in mind the value that Possible specialist
musical therapy services can assume aimed at the
handicapped" (D.P.R. 12 February 1985 n.104, G.U.
n.76 of the 29.03.1985, s.o.)
b) as a characterizing element in the teacher activities,
and therefore as a service managed by the teaching
