to have. Ways <strong>of</strong> creating different types <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

images will be looked at and in particular how the use <strong>of</strong><br />

videotapes <strong>of</strong> clinical material can influence this<br />

procedure.<br />

A thirty eight minute music therapy training videotape <strong>of</strong><br />

the author's Development Centre will then be shown.<br />

The author will explain how and why this video was<br />

made with particular reference to two previous<br />

unsuccessful attempts to make training videotapes.<br />

After the viewing the author will encourage participants<br />

to ask questions and make comments. The different<br />

types <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional identity a video <strong>of</strong> this type will<br />

create for the music therapist will be discussed.<br />

Introduction<br />

However intense a musical experience is, once it is over<br />

one has to rely on memory to recreate or remember the<br />

event; Unlike a painting which provides tangible<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> an artistic creation, a musical performance<br />

or improvisation can not be handled or visually<br />

examined. For the music therapist, this ephemeral<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> music can be an advantage as it may allow a<br />

client to express him or herself without feeling that he or<br />

she is committing themselves in any way. The<br />

disadvantage is that the therapist has to rely entirely on<br />

memory to analyse the work that has been done.<br />

Over the past few years, music therapists have been<br />

videotaping music therapy sessions in order to review<br />

their work more effectively. Videorecordings have
