The Department of Peace and Conflict Research
The department was established at Uppsala University in 1971. It provides a milieu for
research and teaching on topics relating to conflicts, conflict resolution and peace. It has
published more than 200 studies.
Some 300 students enroll in various programmes every academic year. The course
programme includes undergraduate and graduate courses as well as a Ph.D. programme.
The research profile of the Department can be divided into two general fields of study:
– the origins and dynamics of conflict (such as conflict prevention, human security, violent ethnic
conflict, democracy and conflict, belief systems and decision-making, the diffusion of conflict)
– conflict resolution and international security issues (such as peace negotiations, peace
processes, the UN in international peace and stability, regional cooperation and security,
peace-building after war, reconciliation, sanctions)
In addition, there is considerable general work, including some analysis of peace research itself,
as well as the production of research-based educational materials.
Uppsala University
Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest of Sweden’s universities. It is a public
institution, financed by government appropriations. It offers education and research at seven
faculties (theology, law, medicine, pharmacy, arts, social, and natural sciences) as well as a
teacher training programme. It annually enrolls around 38,000 students, including
2500 Ph.D. Candidates. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,
the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden and a number of research institutions,
research-based industries, libraries, and museums are also located in Uppsala.
Halving poverty by 2015 is one of the greatest
challenges of our time, requiring cooperation
and sustainability. The partner countries are
responsible for their own development. Sida
provides resources and develops knowledge and
expertise, making the world a richer place.
