Abstract
This paper will explore the idea that we have entered a new phase in the century-old form
of radio. Although named after the technology on which it was based, radio is best understood
than it was in its second, and in the same way it is useful to see the present state of radio as
an equally far-reaching shift. Contrasting radio’s near cousins – the podcast, the streamed
music service and the simulcast – I will ask questions about how radio will survive in these
turbulent times of media multiplicity and convergence, how a new generation of listeners will
understand radio, and how radio can engage with listeners in new ways online.
Key words: Radio history, Duke Ellington, Transistor, Car radio, Rock ‘n’ Roll, new music
services, internet radio.
