things they did, to ensure the safety of the proverbial enclave of 'European civilization'<br />

perched precariously at the Cape of Good Hope” (Mbeki 1999:elektroniese bron). Dit<br />

gaan egter nie net oor hierdie mense nie en daarom gaan Mbeki voort: “Any attempt to<br />

insulate or isolate the more narrowly defined work of the TRC from this larger setting<br />

will inevitably defeat the very purposes for which the TRC was established.” In hierdie<br />

belangrike stelling beklemtoon hy dat die WVK eintlik gedoem was tot mislukking wat<br />

die meerderheid wit mense aanbetref juis omdat dit so skerp afgestem was op die<br />

menseregte vergrype en nie die algemene klimaat en denke waarbinne dit plaasgevind<br />

het nie. Neville Alexander (aangehaal in Hamilton, Huntley, Alexander, Guimaraes &<br />

James 2001:478) erken die WVK het ʼn stem aan die “voiceless masses” gegee, maar<br />

wat hy noem die “deep level issues”, was “hardly touched.”<br />

Gerloff (1998:35) skryf oor haar besoek aan Suid-Afrika ten tye van die WVKondersoek<br />

en van haar gesprekke “with whites entirely ignorant, if not demeaning, of<br />

the plight of their fellow-citizens.” Sy haal ook studente aan wat in 1996 die land<br />

besoek het: “One of the biggest problems is that the white people don’t think they’ve<br />

done anything wrong” en “They are totally disconnected from history. They make the<br />

assumption that everyone is equal as of this moment; so policies should be set that<br />

assume we’re all on the same plane” (Gerloff 1998:36). Krog (1998a:3) onderstreep<br />

hierdie standpunt as sy skryf oor “Afrikaner intellectuals” wat oor die WVK debatteer en<br />

dan vra: “So how bad could Apartheid have been?”<br />

ʼn Dekade later word presies dieselfde diskoers nog gevoer. In hoofstuk vier is reeds as<br />

voorbeeld hiervan gewys op die rassistiese briewe wat wit mense voorhou as alles wat<br />

goed en eerbaar en reg is, en die swart mense as alles wat sleg en onontwikkeld is<br />

(Boerevryheid 2008:elektroniese bron). Ook Jansen (Johns 2009:1) verwys hierna as<br />

hy vertel van die Reitz-vier: “They asked me with tears what they had done wrong.”<br />

Ook die krieketafrigter Vincent Barnes (aangehaal in Fisher 2007:97) verwys hierna as<br />

hy sê “The majority of South Africans are living their lives in much the same way as<br />

they did under apartheid.”<br />

Die voorsitter van die Menseregte-kommissie, Jody Kollapen verwys na die WVKproses<br />

wat bepaalde "fundamental faults" in sy werk gehad het: "The TRC did not<br />

create sufficient space for the ordinary South African to reflect...” (aangehaal in<br />

Kassiem 2008:1). Die WVK, en alles wat sedert 1994 in Suid-Afrika gebeur het, het
